Mastery Journal Reflection

Mastery Journal Reflection

With another month completed in my Public Relations Master’s program, I’ve gained valuable insights and new tools that bring me closer to my professional goals. This month’s course has been both challenging and rewarding, and it gave me an opportunity to reflect on how far I’ve come and where I’m headed.

1. Expectations vs. Reality

I came into this course expecting to strengthen my ability to present myself and my client work in a professional way. The course delivered on that expectation by teaching me how to develop both a client portfolio and a personal portfolio, each with its own focus and strategy. This experience gave me clarity on how to separate different aspects of my professional identity while maintaining consistency in branding.

2. What I Could Have Done Better

One area I could have improved on this month was the use of imagery and website builders. While I made progress in designing layouts and adding visuals, I sometimes felt that my images did not fully reflect the professionalism I was aiming for. With more time, I would refine those design choices to better align with my overall message and audience expectations.

3. Preparation for My Career

This course prepared me for my career by helping me understand how portfolios function as both storytelling tools and credibility builders. Whether it’s showcasing a Capstone Project or highlighting advocacy work, having a polished portfolio demonstrates strategic communication skills. This lesson is directly transferable to my professional path, where I will need to present campaigns, case studies, and brand stories to clients, employers, and the public.

4. Surprising Takeaway

The most surprising thing I learned this month was how important it is to clearly separate audiences and goals. Initially, I tried to combine my personal advocacy work with my Capstone Project portfolio, but that caused confusion. By creating distinct portfolios, I discovered how clarity and focus improve the storytelling process. This was a valuable reminder that in PR, tailoring your message for the right audience is essential.

Conclusion

Overall, this course helped me build confidence in presenting my work through professional portfolios. It also highlighted areas where I can continue to grow, particularly in design and imagery. Most importantly, it reinforced the value of strategic clarity and audience-focused communication — lessons I will carry forward into my Capstone Project and my future career in public relations.

Until next time, take care and keep shining! 👋🏽✌🏽🐝✨
