Identifying Secondary Conditions to Increase Your VA Disability Rating
Veterans often focus only on their primary service-connected conditions—but secondary conditions can significantly boost your overall rating and compensation.
🧠 What Is a Secondary Service-Connected Condition?
A secondary condition is a new disability caused or worsened by an already service-connected condition. For example:
- Sleep apnea caused by PTSD or weight gain from medications
- Radiculopathy caused by a service-connected back condition
- Depression related to chronic pain
📋 How to Identify Secondary Conditions
Start by asking:
- Do I have symptoms or diagnoses linked to my existing condition?
- Has my doctor mentioned side effects from medications or physical limitations?
You can also review your VA records, speak with a VA-accredited representative, or ask your primary care provider for input.
📝 How to File
To claim a secondary condition:
- Submit VA Form 21-526EZ
- Provide medical evidence and a nexus letter linking the secondary condition
- Include supporting documentation from your provider
