Legal Aspects of Media
How crucial is it to comprehend the legal ramifications of every communication channel in order to prevent future consequences?
Here are a few things I learned this month:
What’s copyright?
“Copyright is a type of intellectual property that protects original works of authorship as soon as an author fixes the work in a tangible form of expression. In copyright law, there are a lot of different types of works, including paintings, photographs, illustrations, musical compositions, sound recordings, computer programs, books, poems, blog posts, movies, architectural works, plays, and so much more!” (U.S. Copyright Office, 2025)
The week three discussion was about copyright, it was a really nice exercise where we had to discuss one copyright lawsuit case. I chose a case based on music works. I was emerged into some information about those small details on how you could claim for copyright when there is certain amount of musical notes to elaborate the melodies while lyrics are easier to claim.

The most helpful assignment this month social media and how when posting content to social media sites, communications professionals must be mindful of copyright regulations and legal issues that could arise from using copyrighted content without the necessary licensing. Ensuring content is original, properly licensed, or meets fair use requirements is critical. Copyright, terms and conditions, and content guidelines violations may result in legal action, including the right to seek damages or social media networks may remove posts if they are reported.
From this month lesson I learn how to read lawsuits and identify how they make decisions when it comes to court cases.
How are the lawsuit cases constitutive for example:
- Case law precedent: is a court decision that serves as a basis for deciding similar cases in the future.
- Statutory Interpretation: is the procedure for figuring out what legislation or law means so that a court can apply it. Another name for it is statutory construction.
- Public Policy Considerations: refers to the various societal values, interests, and potential impacts that policymakers must take into account when developing or implementing laws or policies
To comprehend how courts reach conclusions, we have to read litigation and pay close attention to the court’s referenced precedents, facts, legal concerns and reasoning.
This month was really rewarding full of new knowledge. Understanding legal aspects of each area of communications helps avoid future repercussions. We discuss topics as Ethical Issues in the Media Industry, Defamation, Copyright. We also create podcast and videos presentation opening new ways to share the information to the audiences. The lesson on legal aspects of media fulfills every expectation.
