Separation from the military is already a big stepābut one of the most important (and often confusing) parts of that transition is submitting a VA disability claim. Whether youāve been dealing with chronic back pain, hearing loss, or service-connected mental health challenges, itās your right to file for compensation and care.
Filing correctlyāand on timeācan set you up for long-term success. Hereās what youāll need and what to expect when submitting a VA claim as you prepare to separate.
šÆ Why File Before You Leave?
If youāre still on active duty and planning to file a claim, youāre in a great position to take advantage of the BDD program (Benefits Delivery at Discharge). This allows your claim to be processed fasterāoften resulting in a decision within 30ā90 days after separation instead of waiting months.
To be eligible for BDD, you must:
- Be within 180ā90 days of your separation date
- Be available for exams and communication with the VA
- Not be facing a medical board or already hospitalized long-term
ā What Youāll Need to File
Hereās a checklist of what to gather before you submit:
- VA Form 21-526EZ (Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits)
This is your main claim formāavailable online through VA.gov. - Service Treatment Records (STRs)
These document any injuries, illnesses, or conditions from your time in service. Make sure to:
- Request a complete copy of your STRs
- Highlight any incidents related to your claim(s)
- Current Medical Evidence
If youāve seen civilian doctors or received post-treatment outside the military, include those records. The VA needs recent, relevant proof. - Lay Statements (Buddy Statements)
Statements from fellow service members, family, or friends who witnessed your condition can help support your caseāespecially if your STRs are lacking. - DD-214 (Once Issued)
Your separation paperwork is required for final processing. If you havenāt received it yet, submit the claim but ensure it gets added to your file later.
š§ What Conditions Should You Claim?
You should claim anything that began in service, was aggravated by service, or was diagnosed during serviceāeven if it seems minor now. Common claims include:
- Tinnitus and hearing loss
- Knee, back, or joint pain
- Migraines
- PTSD, anxiety, or depression
- GERD, IBS, or sleep apnea
Even if youāre unsure, itās better to file now and let the VA evaluate. Delaying could complicate things down the line.
𩺠What About Exams?
After filing, youāll likely be scheduled for C\&P exams (Compensation & Pension exams). These are VA-run evaluations to assess the severity and service connection of your conditions.
Tips:
- Be honest and detailed
- Donāt downplay your symptoms
- Show up on timeārescheduling can cause major delays
š¬ Do You Need Help?
You donāt have to go it alone. Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) like:
- DAV (Disabled American Veterans)
- VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars)
- American Legion
can help you file your claim for free. A good VSO rep knows how to write effective statements and spot errors that could slow your claim down.
⨠Final Word: File Smart, File Early
Your time in service mattersāand so does your health. Filing a VA claim isnāt about āasking for a handout.ā Itās about documenting your sacrifice and protecting your future. Whether youāre 25 or 55, donāt leave benefits on the table.
Start the paperwork now. Ask questions. Get help. And most of allādonāt wait.
